Welcome to Jewish Tour Porto!

The Jewish Heritage on the Iberian Peninsula goes back to the first century, still during the Roman Empire. Portuguese historians believe that the first Jewish people arrived in Portugal after the destruction of the second Temple in Jerusalem in 70 CE, during the I century and probably even before during the era of the Phoenicians. After the Romans the land was attacked and ruled by the Germanic tribes, the Barbarians. In 711, Sefard (from Hebrew, meaning both today´s Spain and Portugal) was taken over by the Moors it 711. They were Muslims from northern Africa, they were tolerant towards other religions and the era was called the Golden Age, everyone lived together and flourished. After the so called Reconquista, Sefarad was slowly gained by the Christians, between the X and the XII century. When the Kingdom of Portugal was established in the XI century, during the rule of the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, Jews were given influential and important positions at the royal court. Continuing, up to the XV century Jewish presence was of a big relevance in Portugal. Everything changes, when Spanish Queen and King issue the Edict of Expulsion. Thousands of Jews flee to Portugal, believing here thay would be safe. Unfortunately it only lasted 4 years, when the Portuguese king Manuel I signed an equal the Edict of Expulsion is 1496 This was followed by the establishment of the Inquisition. From this moment the society is divided to “Old Christians” and “New Christians” (those forcefully converted and the following generations (also called in Hebrew: Bnei Annusim). It was an amazing phenomena, when Jews were not allowed to practice anymore, but they did, however secretly in hiding. During the Tour you will learn a lot more about the Crypto-Jews, how kept Jewish religion and customs, passed only orally, as nothing written in Hebrew was allowed anymore. We will visit places, such as Belmonte, where Judaism was completely “underground” until the XX century. There will visit some of the oldest Synagogues (and secret Synagogues). We invite you to explore the Sefardic history and heritage, but the issue of Ashkenazi Jews coming to Portugal and creating their Communities will be one of our subjects as well.
Discover Porto, its people, its history and the culture, on a relaxed tour, tailored to your needs and your pace and learn about the Jewish roots outside the tourist areas.

What Our Clients Say

Picked up from our hotel and taken by car to sites ancient and modern, no aspect of Porto’s Jewish past or present was missed out. Roza is knowledgable and a pleasure to tour Jewish Porto with. Even some ‘locked doors’ were opened with her magic touch.

Roza was amazing!!! We booked a tour with her on our first day in Porto and she gave us a wonderful introduction to the city. Roza met us at the synagogue that we could not enter without her connections with the shul’s staff because of tight security. We were also able to visit the jewish museum which, with Roza’s knowledge, explained the history of Jews in Porto and Portugal. We were also able to visit the Shoa museum called “Yizkor” which we would not have been able to enter without Roza and her connections with the staff (also because of tight security). After spending time in the current jewish area, Roza took us to the old city where she showed us the old jewish quarters and even got us entry into the retirement home which houses an ancient ark discovered in the wall! Amazing. Finally, because of Roza’s knowledge, we were able to book entry into the world’s most beautiful bookstore and walked passed the VERY long lineup into the bookstore like we were vips! Roza is very educated in the history of the Jewish peoples of Spain and Portugal. She obviously has a great love and interest in the jewish history and we learned so much. Thank you Roza!!

10 out of 5!!

This was the most personalized tour to my interest in the subject of Jewish in Porto in history as well as current day.

I had many questions and the tour guide answered all questions from her enormous knowledge of the subject and gave so much of herself.

She is not just a knowledgeable and passionate teacher, she is a generous person with the highest character.

Roza is a great guide. Unfortunately because of the war with hamas, she was not allowed to take us to the synagogue or museum. Instead, she brought the shamas from the synagogue to our hotel to talk about current events in porto. We improvised, she and he met us and talked over coffee for over an hour before going out. She came with notes, pictures, a calendar from the synagogue, and an extensive history. She also took is to the lello bookstore (not to be missed!), and was very helpful. The 3 hours flew past very quickly, and she offered to do more if we had the time! I cannot recommend her highly enough!

We had a wonderful day with Roza Jedrejko showing us Jewish Porto. Roza has a deep knowledge of the history of Jewish life in Porto and shows you spots you would never find on your own or even know to look for. She goes above and beyond to maximize your day and has connections in a variety of places to expedite your experience. She thinks nothing of adding time to the tour as needed to make sure you see what needs to be seen and keeps you comfortable physically and engaged intellectually. If learning about Jewish life, past and present, in Porto is on your to do list. Roza is the person to reach out to.

We have just done this tour with Roza Jedrzeijko and it was excellent. Roza is friendly, very knowledgeable and interesting. She went at our pace, didn’t rush anything and we had a lovely afternoon tour. Highly recommend

Highly recommend this 4-hour tour. Our guide – Ms. Roza Jedrzejko – was very knowledgeable about the complex history and culture of the Jewish population of Porto that dates back to the 1100s. While we toured the former Jewish quarters, Roza “pointed out” places of interest; many that no longer exist (“the hidden synagogue”.) The highlight was a visit to the very active Mekor Haim, Porto’s Synagogue, the largest in the Iberian peninsula. When booking, be sure to check whether synagogue will be open on tour day.
